Conversations with Savanna Key

Today we’d like to introduce you to Savanna Key.

Savanna, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have had a love for photography since I was 12 years old. My MiMi (grandma) is who sparked my interest in photography. I picked up her canon camera one day, took a picture and the rest was history. I started my business in 2018, since then my clientele has grown tremendously and I never thought in a million years this would be my full-time job. I am lucky enough to have a family and a husband who stands by me and supports me. Not many people get to wake up every day and go to their dream job. I can say I’m one of the lucky ones for sure.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My business has had its ups and downs. When I first started in 2018 I was doing most sessions for free or little to nothing just to get my name out there. I started raising my prices as my work got better and for a little while there I wasn’t getting any interest or bookings. I got discouraged and started to think I wasn’t worth my price. Finally, my clientele started to roll in and it got to a point in 2021, last year where I was going to throw in the towel and call it quits.

I was overflowing with bookings and that would be an awesome thing for anyone but when you have a family and kids you want to spend time with, that makes it hard. Money was money and that’s how I was taking care of my family so I kept booking stuff. At the end of 2021, I took a step back to spend time with my family and to figure out if it was worth it. Resume to February of 2022 I picked my camera back up, and learned how to make time for myself and my family but still do my job. It has been a roller coaster, that’s for sure.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a professional photographer in the Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati area but I also travel around the US. I am mostly known for boudoir photography and Wedding photography. If I had to choose my favorite or what I would specialize in, it would have to be Boudoir. I am most proud of my growth from 2018 to 2022. Looking back at my work from then to now is just crazy.

I’ve put in the time and the work to better myself each year and it shows. Am I where I want to be in my business? No, I still have things I want to get better at and accomplish. If I had to choose what sets me apart from other photographers, there would be a few things from the style of my work, it’s very versatile edits. I don’t like my images to all look the same as one another. I give my clients three options of edits that they like or I include them all in a gallery. I feel like a lot of photographers would not take the time of day to do that.

We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
What some people don’t know is that growing up I came from nothing. Not sure where I would end up in 10 years if I stayed where I was at. I was lucky enough to have a way out of my situation and make a life for myself.
